Course Description

This hands on class is designed to teach students the fundamentals of structural timber framing. As a class, students will build a timber framed gazebo. Students will learn how to do all the layout by drawing everything full size on the floor. No math! Patrick encourages students to come and learn an age-old tradition of carpentry and participate in a team building project. By the end of the week students will leave with confidence and knowledge to tackle any backyard shelter or timber framed structure at home with success. 

Key Points:

• How to create a practical stereotomical drawing for the Post & Beam gazebo structure

• How to use the drawing to layout individual timbers using different drawing methods. Rambarrement and Sauterelle methods

• How to cut compound angles with both hand and power tools

• How to layout and cut both simple and complex structural joinery

• How to select proper timber sizes and wood species

• The identification and selection of historical joinery methods and timber material for use in a historical context

• How practical stereotomy was used in the past & how it is relevant today

Spots are limited and are treated on a first come first serve basis. However, priority is given to past students who are working towards their certifications.

Total cost for this course is $1249.00 CAD +HST (13%) or $950.00 USD +HST (13%). Remainder of payment is due on the first day of arrival. A catered lunch is included in the cost.
